The Italian Institute of Culture in Nairobi, in collaboration with the Department of Literature of the University of Nairobi, is pleased to present the open lecture:

Interpreting the World: Umberto Eco Between Philosophy and Storytelling

📅 Wednesday, 11 February
🕥 10:30 a.m.
📍 University of Nairobi, University Tower, Room 10-01

The event is dedicated to the life and work of Umberto Eco, one of the most influential intellectuals of the twentieth century, and offers an in-depth reflection on his philosophical thought and his literary production.

The lecture will feature contributions by:

  • Massimiliano Pilotti, who will explore Umberto Eco as a philosopher and semiotician;
  • Alex Nelungo Wanjala, who will focus on Umberto Eco as a writer, with particular reference to The Name of the Rose.

Following the lectures, The University of Nairobi Travelling Theatre will present a theatrical performance inspired by the work of Umberto Eco, offering a contemporary and scenic interpretation of his themes and narrative suggestions.

On this occasion, a video contribution will also be produced, including the recording of part of the lecture and a short interview with the speakers. The video will be used as part of the 24-hour live-streaming web marathon “A World-Wide Talk for Umberto Eco”, promoted by the Umberto Eco Foundation on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the author’s passing.

At the end of the event, refreshments will be offered to participants.
