Agritools is the name of the web platform, a research exploratory project that aims to understand the real effects of the use of ICTs in the primary sector in the ACP countries.
With most of the arable land still available in subSahara, agriculture, together with livestock and fisheries, are the main activities for the majority of the population and the use of mobile phones has meant a revolution that is improving many aspects of these sectors.
Beside the discovery of successful stories, our main objective is to investigate the impact resulting from this digital revolution on the lives of locals and on their relationship with the land, food and traditions.
What are the major advantages resulting from these ICTs ?
Can they be useful tools of promoting employment of youth in the agricultural areas, or would they sharpen the gap in the long term between a middleclass having access to these services and a poorer class?
Are these projects sustainable?
We are now travelling across 4 African countries (Senegal, Ghana, Uganda and Kenya) to document and share interesting ICT4Ag stories with the online community.

Elisabetta Demartis (Project coordinator) obtained a Master in Cooperation and Development from the Department of Economics and Statistics, at the University of Turin, specializing in the field of ICT4D and communication for human rights. She is currently working on a research project related to ICTs in agriculture in Senegal, with the aim to map and study the influence of new information and communication technologies on the African agricultural sector. In 2013, she followed a project to monitor the elections in Kenya with Map Kibera in collaboration with Ushahidi, an organization of participatory journalism that is using crowdmaps in order to monitor the violence in the slums in order to prevent post-election conflict. She collaborates with a number of newspapers on the issue of ICTs and technological innovations for social inclusion, with a particular focus on Africa.
