Italian illustrator Stefania D’Amato will be a guest of the Italian Cultural Institute of Nairobi  for an artistic residency from 12th to 22nd September.

During the residency, which will take place between Nairobi and the Tafaria Castle & Centre for the Arts, Stefania D’Amato will lead a creative project that will culminate in the publication of an artist’s book and the production of a collective artwork. In particular, D’Amato will work with the finalists of the art competition “Empowering Art: Kenya’s Creative Voices”, promoted by AICS Nairobi and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) – Nairobi Regional Office, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy. In addition to working closely with the artists to create a collective work with a strong visual and symbolic impact (which will then be exhibited at the Maktaba Kuu during the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence”), the young participants will have the opportunity to deepen their awareness of issues related to gender violence in relation to their artistic journey, thus enriching their educational experience.

The initiative is part of the “Activate Nairobi” campaign, organised in collaboration with the AICS office in Nairobi

Stefania D’Amato (Brescia, 1988) studied anthropology and visual arts and graduated in Illustration and Graphic Design for Images at ISIA in Urbino. Her artistic research creates a simple, immediate and profound visual world, observed through an anthropological lens. She has participated in several exhibitions, including “Utopia XVI edition of the International Exhibition of Contemporary Illustrators”, “Il giardino planetario” (Librimmaginari) and “CHEAP – street poster art”. In 2021, she published “Abitata Pietra” with Viaindustriae. Her illustrations appear in numerous publications. Stefania is part of the artistic staff of the Pinac Foundation (which received the Andersen Prize in 2021) and the International School of Comics in Brescia.
