Reading a Picture
The work of Piero della Francesca (Sansepolcro / Florence 1415-1492) defined “the monarch of painting” was a reference point for artists from all eras, up to contemporary Balthus and Hopper.
We propose a breakdown of one of his paintings in narrative sequences whose observation allows us to understand the influence that this work has had over the centuries.

The masterpiece of Alessandro Manzoni’s I promessi Sposi – The Betrothed – is universally known as one of the most accomplished examples of the historical novel, and the influence that the work has had on the development of the Italian language.
But the importance of this novel is also determined by the technical solutions adopted by Manzoni, in particular with regard to the descriptions of people and places.
A visual approach to the famous incipit “One arm of Lake Como turns off to the south … ” shows the surprising modernity of this nineteenth century Italian writer.
