On April 6, 1520, Raffaello Sanzio, one of the geniuses of the Italian Renaissance, passed away in Rome. Five hundred years later, while we wait for cultural institutions and museums to open their doors again after the current health crisis, Italy and the world celebrate the Maestro through several multimedia initiatives. Join us on this online tour, guiding us through Raphael’s unsurpassed style and analyzing how his art became a paragon of classicism that set the standards for aesthetic excellence in the Western tradition.
A collection of videos about Raphael is now available on the YouTube channel of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The playlist “Raphael 500: Universal Master” (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9zh4eHRSCDnE0R76ZLmkjmm5WLX19J08) features the trailers of the two travelling exhibitions Raffaello Opera Omnia and Magister Raffaello and tidbits in ten short videos by scholars and experts dedicated to lesser-known aspects of Raphael’s art.
The Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, one of Italy’s most famous exhibition venues, inaugurated a mega-exhibition devoted to the Master on March 5th, 2020. With over two hundred masterpieces, including paintings, drawings and works for comparison, and over a hundred pieces by Raphael never gathered together, the exhibition constitutes the high point of the world-wide commemorative celebrations and the showpiece of the program approved by the Italian National Committee specially instituted by the Heritage Minister Dario Franceschini and chaired by Antonio Paolucci.
Amid the Covid-19 emergency, the exhibition has closed its doors to the public but remains open online (https://www.scuderiequirinale.it/pagine/raffaello-oltre-la-mostra}for everyone who wishes to be enlightened and uplifted by Raphael’s masterpieces.
