CYCLE OF THEMATIC EVENTS - VIRTUAL CONFERENCES ON SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE AND GLOBAL HEALTH

ITALIAN WORLD RESEARCH DAY 2021 - VIRTUAL CONFERENCE ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI

Taking place today, 20 April at 2.30 pm, on the occasion of Italian World Research Day, is the virtual conference on new technological perspectives in the sustainable agriculture sector and on innovative solutions for the development of the circular economy, applicable also to the continent of Africa. Interventions by Prof. Fabrizio Adani, Full Professor at the University of Milan and, from the University of Nairobi, Prof. Raphael G. Wahome, Prof. Richard Onwonga and Dr. Thuita Thenya, experts in agro-ecology and environmental issues.

The initiative, aimed above all at new generations, Kenyan students and postgraduates, constitutes the third of a cycle of thematic events (the first two respectively on the theme of sustainable architecture and global health) promoted by the Italian Embassy in Nairobi and launched last February, which intends to stimulate debates and reflections on issues of priority in current times and to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Italy and Kenya in the academic and scientific fields.

The Italian World Research Day is an annual review dedicated to the promotion and enhancement of the results of Italian researchers and their contribution to scientific research around the world.

SECOND ONLINE CONFERENCE ON GLOBAL HEALTH: "Impact of epidemics on Global Health"

The second of the cycle of online conferences in collaboration with the University of Nairobi, entitled "Impact of epidemics on Global Health", was held on Thursday 4 March, aimed at encouraging discussion on a highly topical issue.

From the Ebola outbreak to the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) or the COVID-19 pandemic, how are these global health challenges affecting public health?

A reflection on global health, also in view of the "Global Health Summit" which will take place in Italy in May 2021 under the Italian Presidency of the G20.

VIRTUAL CONFERENCE ON SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE: "Sustainable Architecture in Africa: Italian Contributions"

The first of a series of virtual conferences in collaboration with the University of Nairobi took place on 3rd of February. Initiatives in the presence of experts and aimed at promoting debates and discussions on issues, relevant to the Nations and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the academic, scientific and research and innovation sectors. For this first cycle of academic meetings, the key sectors of Architecture, Global Health, Sustainable Agriculture and circular economy were selected.

This first lecture, entitled "Sustainable Architecture in Africa: Italian Contributions", was aimed at encouraging reflection in the Kenyan academic world for the benefit of new generations of architects on new architectural and technological perspectives, with attention to innovative solutions applicable in East Africa and in other tropical areas, thanks to the contribution and sharing of good practices by the Italian speaker, prof. Niccoló Aste, Full Professor of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, and the Kenyan speaker, Prof. Musau Kimeu, Chairman of the Department of Architecture of the University of Nairobi.

African cities are growing rapidly and there is greater interest in finding new ways to reduce costs, new construction methods, increase energy savings and efficiency and promote recycling. In his introductory speech, the Ambassador of Italy to Kenya, Alberto Pieri, highlighted not only "the importance of academic and scientific cooperation as a tool for strengthening relations between countries, in this case between Italy and Kenya ", But also how sustainable architecture is a topic of great importance," because we believe in the growing importance of a global approach to tackle climate change, possible only by reducing consumption and increasing energy efficiency "in line also with "the priorities of the Italian Presidency of the G20 this year, which focuses on People, Planet and Prosperity, recognizing the value of smart and sustainable cities for this purpose".

Niccolò Aste
Full Professor, Politecnico di Milano

Starting from 1995, he has been actively engaged in research activities related to energy efficiency of the built environment and to the exploitation of renewable energy sources and their use in building sector, both at urban and at territorial level.

Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Technological Innovation and Architectural Design, Politecnico di Milano, 2000. Since 2002, he is working at Politecnico di Milano, where, among other positions, he also holds that of Delegate of the Rector for International Relationship with Africa.

Author of several scientific handbooks and more than 100 publications in various scientific journals of repute and conferences, he has participated in several national and international R&D programs on the correlated issues of sustainable architecture.

Musau Kimeu

Master of Philosophy in Environmental Design in Architecture (M.Phil) degree from the University of Cambridge (UK) and Bachelor of Architecture - First Class Honours from the University of Nairobi (Kenya), he is a registered Architect and a Corporate member of the Architectural Association of Kenya.

He is the Chairman and founder member of the Environmental Design Consultants Chapter of the Architectural Association of Kenya. He has been project architect for numerous projects over the last 19 years. His research activities are centred on the environmental performance of buildings and are currently focused on Climate Change. He is Chairman and Lecturer at the Department of Architecture, University of Nairobi where he teaches Environmental/Sustainable Building Science and Architectural design.
